Talk to Me Jimmy edged clear late to best Sculos Folly by 1 ¼-lengths in the $155,000 New York Derby July 13 at Finger Lakes. This was the second career stakes win for the 3-year-old son of Modernist, who was also a close second in this year’s Peter Pan S. (G3).
The 1 1/16-mile New York Derby essentially became a match race between Talk to Me Jimmy and Sculos Folly soon after the start. Sculos Folly, with a narrow advantage along the inside, set fractions of :45.67 and 1:10.05. Midway on the final turn, the front runners had opened up by six lengths on the rest of the field. They battled side-by-side until deep stretch, when Talk to Me Jimmy pulled clear to secure the win.
Talk to Me Jimmy, now 3-1-1 in six starts, has earned $317,000 for owners SEI Thoroughbreds, Michael Imperio and Rudy Rodriguez, the latter also the colt’s trainer. The winner was bred in New York by Majestic View Farms Intl.
Modernist, a multiple graded-winning son of Uncle Mo, is also the sire of this year’s Lexington S. (G3) winner Trendsetter. Currently in the top 10 on the Second-Crop sire list, Modernist’s 2026 fee was $5,000 S&N.
