Tapiture’s Lily Poo wins California Oaks in stakes debut

Lily Poo put away the field in the final furlong to win Saturday’s $75,000 California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields in the stakes debut for the 3-year-old daughter of Tapiture.

Lily Poo is the fourth stakes winner and seventh stakes horse overall in 2023 for Tapiture. The Darby Dan’s next opportunity to add to those totals will come on May 4 when the 2-year-old colt Lou’s Legacy goes postward in the $200,000 Kentucky Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs.

Lily Poo shipped from her southern California base for Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile contest. She took up a spot in second behind pacesetter Smiling Lady going into the first turn. Those two ran one-two until mid-stretch, when Lily Poo asserted herself and took command easily, drawing off late to stop the timer in 1:45.61.

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, the chestnut filly is 2-2-0 in five starts and has earned $118,440. Lily Poo was bred in Kentucky by Michael Meeks.
