Dreamfyre is now a stakes winner on the turf and dirt following her stellar effort in winning Sunday’s Surfer Girl S. (G3) at Santa Anita Park.

The 2-year-old daughter of top-five First-Crop sire Flameaway previously won the Sorrento S. (G3) over Del Mar’s main track, and is now a perfect three-for-three with earnings of $285,000 for owner Danny Eplin.

Dreamfyre showed her customary speed on Sunday, leading the field through a half-mile in :48.59. She was headed by Buttercream Babe with a quarter-mile to run, but quickly retook the lead straightening for home. Buttercream Babe would not relent in the stretch, and Dreamfyre gave all she had to win by a neck in 1:37.11 for the mile on the firm turf.

“She ran big and I’m glad she did. She should get a lot out of this and maybe after this race she could go a little further,” said trainer O. J. Jauregui. “That was the question, the distance and the turf. The sire was a turf horse so I knew we had a shot. If she looks great, we will go and give Breeders’ Cup [Juvenile Fillies Turf] a shot.”

Dreamfyre was bred in Kentucky by John Oxley and sold for $140,000 to her owner at the 2023 OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training. Dreamfyre’s dam Appreciating is also the dam of Grade 1-placed Nasreddine and has a yearling full-brother to Dreamfyre.

Flameaway is one of only three First-Crop sires with multiple stakes winners. He also got his 14th individual winner on Sunday when the colt Freedom Principle won a two-turn maiden special weight race by 7 ¾-lengths at Gulfstream Park.
