Trouble Calling became the 35th lifetime stakes winner for Dialed In with his narrow victory in Friday’s $400,000 Lafayette S. at Keeneland.
Making his first stakes appearance after a six-length maiden score on Valentine’s Day at Fair Grounds, 3-year-old Trouble Calling was away in sixth in the field of seven as Carson Street blitzed a quarter-mile in :21.91. After dropping back to last entering the turn, Trouble Calling began his rally with three furlongs to run to move up to third after turning for home.
With Oscar’s Hope to his inside, Trouble Calling continued to close ground and outdueled Oscar’s Hope through the final sixteenth to win by a head in 1:24.03 for the seven furlongs on a sloppy track.
“He’s always been a horse that had a lot of speed, so we thought we were going to be right there pretty close, but the track was not playing the best for him,” said winning jockey Luis Saez. “It was kind of a little deep, so he took a little while to get going, but when he saw [he was in] the clear at the three-eighths [pole], he started to get going and he finished really strong.”
Bred and owned by Donamire Farm, Trouble Calling is a half-brother to Troubleshooting, winner of last year’s Franklin-Simpson S. (G1) and is entered in the Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) on April 17.
Trouble Calling is now 2-2-1 in six starts and has earned $326,039.
Perennially among the leading sires by winners, Dialed In is standing this year for $10,000 S&N.
