Trendsetter swung off the fence at the top of the Keeneland stretch and rolled by the pacesetters to win Saturday’s $400,000 Lexington S. (G3) by a widening 2 ¼-lengths.
The victory marked the first graded win for the 3-year-old son of Modernist. Trendsetter won the Hickory Tree S. as a 2-year-old and also placed in both the Rushaway S. and Turfway Preview S. earlier this year.
In the 1 1/16-mile Lexington, Trendsetter made his way to the inside going around the first turn after breaking from post 8. He held his spot in fifth down the backstretch, a few lengths off the leader Corona de Oro. Stuck behind horses on the final turn, Trendsetter went three-wide just before turning for home. Once in the clear, he rolled by the top two and won going away in 1:44.51 on the fast main track.
“I wouldn’t say I was surprised,” trainer Ben Colebrook said of the 32-1 winner. “I thought he was going to run good. I definitely didn’t think that kind of performance was there, but I thought we were going to see some improvement, and if he improved, then he was going to be kind of right there with these horses and get a piece of it.”
Owned by Midway Racing LLC (Davant Latham), Trendsetter is 3-1-1 in eight starts and has earned $421,962. He was bred in Kentucky by Circle B Family Farm.
In addition to Trendsetter, Modernist is also the sire of this year’s Withers S. winner Talk to Me Jimmy. A Second-Crop sire of 2026, Modernist stands for $5,000 S&N.
