by Alan Porter - A Classic winner and outstanding sprinter/miler, Shackleford is by one of the most successful sons of Storm Cat out of the remarkable producer Oatsee – dam of five stakes winners, four graded stakes winners, and two grade one winners – and from the immediate family of Gone West. Off to a highly-promising start to his stud career, Shackleford was a top three second season sire in 2017.

Shackleford’s dam, Oatsee, is by Unbridled, a son of Fappiano - from the Mr. Prospector line – and inbreeding to Fappiano is beginning to do well. Here it could be tried through such as Quiet American (broodmare sire of Shackleford’s talented son, Beasley), Cryptoclearance (broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by a son of Forestry, the sire of Shackleford, and grandsire of Candy Ride, himself responsible for Twirling Candy and Sidney’s Candy), Cahill Road, a brother to Unbridled who is broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Forestry, the sire of Shackleford, and Pentelicus, a three-quarters brother to Unbridled).

Shackleford is from the family of Gone West, and there is a Forestry line stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West, stakes winners out of mares by Gone West line stallions Elusive Quality (sire of Smarty Jones and Quality Road), Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley (sire of El Corredor) and Trajectory, which also suggests mares by Speightstown and Proud Citizen. There is a grade one winner by a son of Forestry out of a mare by Marquetry (sire of Artax), from the Conquistador Cielo branch of Mr. Prospector. From the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector there are Forestry line stakes winners out of mares by Forty Niner and Jules (sire of Peace Rules), with other sources of Forty Niner including Distorted Humor (sire of Flower Alley, Sharp Humor, Any Given Saturday and Drosselmeyer), Banker’s Gold, Coronado’s Quest, Editor’s Note, End Sweep (sire of Trippi), Gold Case, Gold Fever, Roar and Tactical Advantage. There is a grade one winner by Forestry out of a mare by Crafty Prospector (sire of Prospectors Gamble, Crafty C. T., Prospect Bay and Robyn Dancer), a graded winner out of a mare by Lycius, and stakes winners out of mares by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakkdim, Petionville and Cape Town), Kingmambo (sire of Lemon Drop Kid), Smart Strike (sire of Curlin, Lookin At Lucky and English Channel), Two Punch and his son Smoke Glacken, Jade Hunter, Woodman, Formal Gold (by Black Tie Affair, a son of Miswaki) and Rizzi (by Afleet, sire of Northern Afleet and grandsire of Afleet Alex, himself sire of a graded winner out of the dam of Shackleford.

Shackleford’s grade two winner Malagacy is out of a mare by Dehere, from the Deputy Minister branch of Northern Dancer. There are also two Forestry line stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister himself, two stakes winners out of mares by Silver Deputy (sire of Badge of Silver – the broodmare sire of a Forestry line graded winner – Posse and Spring At Last). Deputy Minister could also be brought in through Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper, Toccet, Daaher and Awesome of Course), Deputy Commander, Forest Camp, French Deputy, Salt Lake, Touch Gold, Graeme Hall (a son of Dehere) and Defrere (a brother to Dehere).

Shackleford is sire of undefeated two-year-old graded stakes winner Dream It Is out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro, by El Prado (sire of Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller) from the Sadler’s Wells line that might also be brought in through Horse Chestnut.

From the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer there are two Forestry graded winners, one grade one, out of mares by Orpen (a close relative to Danehill), and stakes winners out of mares by Belong to Me, Pine Bluff and Polish Numbers, with other options including Boundary, Dayjur, Langfuhr, Exchange Rate, Hard Spun, War Front and War Chant.

Both Storm Cat and Shackleford’s broodmare sire, Unbridled, have enjoyed success with mares from the Caro line and out of mares from that line Shackleford already has graded stakes winner Wellabled out of mare by In Excess, and a graded stakes placed horse out of a mare by that horse’s son, Indian Charlie (sire of Uncle Mo). This also invites trying Caro through Siberian Express and Siberian Summer, and Forestry and his sons have stakes winners out of mares by Alphabet Soup and his sire Cozzene (also sire of Mizzen Mast, who would be interesting here) and Tejano Run (by Tejano).

The Cure the Blues branch of Hail to Reason has been extremely good under Storm Cat, and Forestry and his sons are no exception, getting stakes winners out of mares by American Chance, Tethra and Take Me Out. From the Halo branch of Hail to Reason, there is a Forestry line graded stakes winner from a mare by Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due and Diable), a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s brother, Saint Ballado (sire of Saint Liam, Captain Bodgit, Sweetsouthernsaint and Yankee Victor), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Halo grandson, More Than Ready.

Forestry and sons have done well with mares carrying Damascus, including getting grade one winner Discreet Cat out of a mare by Private Account, graded stakes winner Air Khalifa out of a mare by Afternoon Deelites (by Private Account son, Private Terms (broodmare sire of two Forestry line stakes winners). There is also a stakes winner by a son of Forestry out of a mare by Private Account son, Top Account, and that strain might also be brought in through Unaccounted For. There is also a Forestry line multiple graded stakes winner out of mare by Great Gladiator, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Gilded Time, both from the Timeless Moment branch of Damascus.

There is a Storm Cat line Champion Two-Year-Old out of a mare by Orientate, and that horse sired grade one winner Lady Joanne out of the dam of Shackleford. Orientate is a son of Mt. Livermore – already broodmare sire of a Shackleford graded stakes horse – and he could also be brought in through Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys. There two stakes winners, one graded by Forestry and his sons and mares by Meadowlake and there is also a stakes winner by Forestry out of a mare by Lost Code.
