Perfect Soul

Alan Porter - A  champion and multiple grade one winning miler, Perfect Soul, is by the great sire and sire of sires, Sadler’s Wells, out of a Secretariat mare from a top-class family. Sire of both a Breeders’ Cup Champion and a classic winner, Perfect Soul is also a brother to a classic sire.

Perfect Soul sired classic winner Perfect Shower out of a mare by Miswaki , a product of the Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser cross. Miswaki could be introduced throughBlack Tie Affair and his son, Formal Gold, while other sources of the Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser cross include Woodman – broodmare sire of a stakes horse by Perfect Soul and available through Hansel and Timber Country – and Seeking the Gold, sire of Cape TownMutakddim and Petionville. From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, Perfect Soul has a stakes winner out of a mare by Unbridled (who might be introduced through Unbridled’s Song and sons, Broken Vow,Grindstone and Birdstone). There are also Sadler’s Wells line stakes winner out of mares descending from Fappiano through RoyCryptoclearance (grandsire ofCandy Ride) and Defensive Play, and Fappiano might also be introduced through RubianoQuiet American and Empire Maker. Perfect Soul also has a stakes horse out of a mare by Mr. Prospector son, Kingmambo (giving Sadler’s Wells and his three-parts-brother, Nureyev), himself sire of Lemon Drop Kid. Among other branches of Mr. Prospector that we can note as having done well under Sadler’s Wells are Gulch (and his son, Thunder Gulch), Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry);Gone West, sire of Mr. GreeleyGrand SlamElusive QualitySpeightstown (who could be particularly interesting here) and Proud CitizenConquistador Cielo(sire of Marquetry; grandsire of Artax); and Forty Niner, who might be particularly good through Distorted Humor (whose son, Flower Alley, would give inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells) and who could also be introduced through Tactical AdvantageRoarGold Fever (who gives linebreeding to the family of Exclusive Native, sire of the granddam of Perfect Soul), End SweepTrippiCoronado’s QuestTwiningGold CaseIde and Luhuk. It should also be worth trying mares by Northern Afleet(bred on the same Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross as Kingmambo) and his son Afleet AlexNumerous (broodmare sire of a Perfect Soul stakes winner), Chequer andGeiger Counter are all by Mr. Prospector from the family of Sadler’s Wells.

Perfect Soul’s brother, Not Impossible, sired the Queen’s Plate victor, Not Bourbon, out of a mare by Storm Boot, a son of Storm Cat from the family of Sadler’s Wells.Storm Cat gives a parallel Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross to Perfect Soul, and his dam, Terlingua, is bred similarly to the dam of Perfect Soul. We can note that Perfect Soul also has stakes horses out of mares by Storm Cat sons Tale of the Cat (whose son, Lion Heart should do well) and High Yield, suggesting trying mares by such as Stormy Atlantic (from the same family as Sadler’s Wells), Giant’s CausewayMenifeeCatienusForestry and Mountain Cat (all broodmare sires of Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners), as well as HennessyJohannesburgForest WildcatTactical CatHarlanHarlan’s HolidayCat Thief and Storm Creek. Perfect Soul also has two stakes horses out of mares by another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross, Dehere, who is a son of Deputy Minister, a horse who is interesting here as he is from the family of Exclusive Native, sire of the second dam of Perfect Soul). Other sources of Deputy Minister that appeal include Silver DeputyTouch GoldAwesome AgainFrench DeputySalt LakeDeputy Commander (broodmare sire of a Sadler’s Wells line stakes winner) and Forest Camp.

Another source of the Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross would be Chief’s Crown, who would be particularly interesting through Chief Honcho or Bellamy Road (byConcerto) who are both from the Exclusive Native family. Chief’s Crown is by Danzig, a strain that has enjoyed success under Sadler’s Wells through Anabaa,Danehill (brother to Eagle Eyed), DayjurHonor GradesPolish NumbersWar Chant and Pine BluffBelong To Me is a Danzig who brings in Exclusive Native, and Lost Soldier is another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross. Two European branches of Danzig that would also be interesting are Green Desert (who was represented in the U.S. by Sheikh Albadou) and Perugino (three-parts-brother to Sadler’s Wells). Introducing Northern Dancer through Nureyev – a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells – appeals, with representatives that might be found in the U.S., including TheatricalSpinning WorldStravinksy and Zilzal (all broodmare sires of Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners), with Atticus being another Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross. Sadler’s Wells has enjoyed success over some branches of Nijinsky II, who might do well here through Sword Dance (a Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross from the family of Sadler’s Wells), Royal AcademyGreen Dancerand Shadeed (sire of Alydeed).

Perfect Soul is sire of listed stakes winner Soul of Nataka out of a mare by With  Approval, a son of Caro. The cross of Sadler’s Wells over a mare descending fromCaro through In Excess, suggesting trying daughters of Indian Charlie There is also a grade one winner by Mizzen Mast, and a graded winner by Alphabet Soup, both by the Caro stallion, Cozzene (himself sire of stakes winner out of a Sadler’s Wells, and also successful under Sadler’s Wells mares).

Caro is a Nasrullah line stallion, and Perfect Soul’s brother, Not Impossible, sired graded winner Society’s Chairman out of a mare by Olympio, from the Naskra line. Introducing Naskra through Star de Naskra might also beneficial.

Not Impossible also has listed stakes winner Impossible Time out of a mare by Pleasant Colony, who most notably, is sire of Pleasant Tap (who would bring in Never Bend, a horse who is excellent with Sadler’s Wells) and  Pleasantly Perfect. The second dam of Impossible time is bred on a Halo (Hail to Reason)/Northern Dancercross, which is a reverse to Sadler’s Wells, and the same cross as Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready). The Roberto branch of Hail to Reason line has provided the dam of a stakes placed horse for Perfect Soul (out of a mare by Lear Fan, who brings in Lt. Stevens, giving linebreeding to the family of Sadler’s Wells).

Perfect Soul’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. I) heroine, Perfect Shirl, is out of a mare from the Noholme II branch of the Star Kingdom line, most frequently found through Nodouble and Shecky Greene (sire of Green Forest). The second dam is by a close relative to Alydar, who can be found through Turkoman,Saratoga SixStrike the GoldEasy GoerCriminal Type, WheatonJeblar and Alysheba (who is out of a mare by Lt. Stevens, giving linebreeding to the family of Sadler’s Wells).

Perfect Soul’s dam is by Secretariat out of a mare by Exclusive Native, and he has a stakes winner carrying General Assembly (by Secretariat, out of Exclusive Dancer, a three-parts-sister to Exclusive Native). This would also suggest trying mares by American Chance (who carries Exclusive Dancer and Speedwell, a three-parts-sister to Secretariat). This family can also be brought in through the previously mentioned Gold FeverChief Honcho and Bellamy Road, as well as Out of Place.
