American Lion

by Alan Porter - American Lion is a graded stakes winner at two and three years. He is son of Champion and classic sire, Tiznow, and his dam is by Storm Cat – also broodmare sire of hot young sire Speightstown – out of a grade one winning daughter of Carson City.

Tiznow is out of a mare by a son of Seattle Slew, but he has already sired three stakes winners, two graded out of Seattle Slew line mares. These are from daughters of Slewpy, and of A.P. Indy.  The influence of A.P. Indy – broodmare sire of Tiznow’s grade one winning son, Morning Line – could be introduced through such as Pulpit (who could be brought in through Sky Mesa - giving inbreeding to Storm Cat - and Tapit – giving a sister to Tiznow’s grandsire, Relaunch), Malibu Moon, Mineshaft, Old Trieste,  Stephen Got Even, and Jump Start (giving inbreeding to Storm Cat). Other Seattle Slew sources include Vindication, Slew o’Gold, Septieme Ciel and Doneraile Court. Seattle Slew is a Bold Ruler (by Nasrullah) line horse, and Tiznow is also sire of Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed, who is out of a mare by Notebook (from the Raja Baba branch of Bold Ruler) and with a second dam by Seattle Slew. From the Caro branch of the Nasrullah line comes Tiznow’s Canadian Champion Bear Now(out of a mare by In Excess, the sire of Indian Charlie). Bold Ruler though Secretariat appears to be a strain that works very well with Tiznow, appearing in at least 11 of his stakes winners, five graded.

American Lion is out of a mare by Storm Cat, from the Northern Dancer line. He should cross well back over Northern Dancer line mares. We can note that from this line Tiznow has sired graded stakes winners from mares by Dixieland Band and his son, Dixie Brass (also suggesting Dixie Union mares),and stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister sons Dehere and Salt Lake (which also suggests trying daughters of such as Awesome Again and Touch Gold). The Nijinsky II line might work here, including through Royal Academy, a close relative to Storm Cat.  The cross of Tiznow with mares by Storm Cat and his sons is one of his strongest, having produced six stakes winners, including American Lion and juvenile Champion Folklore. We can note that Speightstown (whose dam is by Storm Cat) has sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by a son of Storm Cat, and it could be worth cautiously trying the same formula here. On pedigree American Lion might be particularly well-suited by Storm Cat sons such as Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Tale of the Cat, Storm Boot, Forestry, and  Forest Wildcat, Hennessy and Tabasco Cat (all three broodmare sires of stakes winners by Tiznow). Summer Squall (sire of Charismatic), is a three-quarters relative to Storm Cat, and Chief’s Crown is a parallel Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross to Storm Cat.  We can also note that Tiznow’s 2011 multiple grade on winner and Championship contender, Tizway, is out of a mare by Dayjur (a son of Danzig).

Tiznow is beginning to evolve a strong affinity for a variety of branches of the Mr.Prospector line. He has two graded winners out of mares by Mr. Prospector himself, including the extremely promising Gemologist. He has stakes winners out of mares Gone West and his son, West By West, which suggests testing mares by such as Grand Slam, Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, Speightstown (giving inbreeding to Storm Cat) and Proud Citizen. From the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, Tiznow has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Pentelicus, a three-parts-brother to Unbridled (sire of Unbridled’s Song, Broken Vow, and Grindstone), and Fappiano  might also be good through Rubiano (whose granddam is a sister to Relaunch) and Quiet American. There are also Tiznow stakes winners out of mares by Seeking the Gold (sire of Mutakddim, Petionville and Cape Town)and Woodman (both Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser crosses, as are Miswaki and Mining). There is also a Tiznow graded stakes winner out of a mare carrying Crafty Prospector, who is out of a mare bred very similarly to Relaunch.  From other branches of the Raise a Native line Tiznow has sired multiple grade one winner Colonel John out of a mare by Turkoman (by Alydar) and stakes winner Tizzy’s Tune out of a mare by Eternal Prince (by Majestic Prince).

American Lion has double of Tiznow’s male line ancestor, In Reality. Cee's Tizzy, the sire of Tiznow, is sire of a stakes winner out of a mare by Great Above, who is bred on the reverse cross to In Reality. Great Above can also be brought in as the sire of Holy Bull, and as the broodmare sire of Housebuster. It would also be worth considering Housebuster’s sire, Mt. Livermore. He is a son of Blushing Groom, and Tiznow also has a grade one performer out of a mare by Blushing Groom son Rahy. Here this gives a double of Blushing Groom, and this works well with Carson City, sire of the granddam of American Lion.

Tiznow’s Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Da’ Tara, is out of a mare by Pirate’s Bounty, a son of Hoist the Flag, from the Ribot line. In general, Relaunch line stallions have  worked well with Turn-to and Hail to Reason. Tiznow has limited success with this cross, but does have grade two winner Tizahit out of mare by Kris S. (by Roberto).
