Pedigree Nobiz Like Shobiz
Breeding Analysis
Analysis by Alan Porter

Nobiz Like Shobiz has an intriguing pedigree, with several elements that offer opportunity for reinforcement.

He is a Ribot line stallion, with two crosses of Northern Dancer (that will be in the sixth and fifth generation of his foals) and one cross of Mr. Prospector (that will be in the fifth generation of his foals), and this means he is free to cross with mares from both of those sire lines.

From the Northern Dancer line, we would look for mares carrying strains of Nijinsky II (particularly through Royal Academy, a close relative to Storm Cat, the broodmare sire of Nobiz Like Shobiz), The MinstrelFar North and Fanfreluche (whose sons L’Enjoleur, D’Accord, and Medaille d’Or, sire of Tour d’Or would all fit well here). The Northern Dancer line through Danzig, Dixieland Band, and Nureyev has done well with Nobiz Like Shobiz’s branch of the Ribot line. It might also work well to introduce Northern Dancer through Northern Dancer/Secretariat crosses (such as Dehere, Chief’s Crown), Northern Dancer/Sir Gaylord crosses (for example, El Prado) and Northern Dancer/Buckpasser crosses. It would also be possible to consider breeding him to mares that are by sons or grandsons of his own broodmare sire, Storm Cat. Particularly interesting might be Harlan (bred on the same cross as the dam of Nobiz Like Shobiz) and his sons, Harlan’s Holiday and Menifee, Hennessy (and his son, Johannesburg), Forestry, and Giant’s CausewaySummer Squall who is bred on the same cross as Storm Cat could also be interesting.

From the Mr. Prospector line, Forty Niner (sons include Coronado’s QuestDistorted HumorEditor’s Note, End Sweep, Roar, Tactical Advantage, Twining) is one particularly interesting option. It is also well worth considering mares by Fappiano line stallions, to duplicate this horse, examples including Unbridled (sire of Unbridled’s Song – already broodmare sire of a stakes winner from this sire line – Broken Vow, and Empire Maker; grandsire of Songandaprayer), Cryptoclearance (particularly interesting), Cahill Road, Pentelicus, Grindstone, Roy and RubianoOther branches of theMr. Prospector line that have produced stakes winners when bred to stallions from this branch of the Ribot line include Crafty Prospector, Fortunate Prospect, Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair), Seeking the Gold (sire of Cape Town, Petionville and Mutakddim) and Woodman. We would also expect to see mares by sons of Gone West, such as Elusive Quality, Grand Slam and Mr. Greeley, work here, as should Two Punch and his son, Smoke GlackenMr. Prospector/Northern Dancer crosses should also prove helpful.

Nobiz Like Shobiz’s second dam is by Halo out of a mare by Herbager. This cross also produced Champion Devil’s Bag (sire of Devil His Due, Diablo, and Twilight Agenda, who looks particularly interesting here), Saint Ballado (sire of Captain Bodgit, Straight Man, Sweetsouthernsaint, and Yankee Victor), and Glorious Song (dam of Rahy and Singspiel). Other sources of Halo, that are viable here are Halo’s Image, Jolie’s Halo, Southern Halo (sire of More Than Ready), and Sunny’s Halo.

Two strains to look out for are The Axe II and Grey Dawn II. Both are in Holy Bull, and a good source of The Axe II is Relaunch (who would be particularly good through Tiznow). Nobiz Like Shobiz’s grandsire, Go For Gin, is a three-parts-brother to Champion Pleasant Tap, who would be an interesting broodmare sire to try here. Any reinforcement of the Nasrullah/Princequillo or Princequillo/Nasrullah cross looks positive. With Princequillo in mind, consider his male line descendent Meadowlake, who had a very strong affinity for Cormorant, who is in the male line of Nobiz Like Shobiz.
