Ya Gotta Have Soul's win in a maiden special weight race at Keeneland on Apr. 23 was a victory for Darby Dan in many respects. The 4-year-old colt is by the Darby Dan stallion Perfect Soul, and he was also foaled and raised at the historic Kentucky farm.

The 1 1/16-mile race unfolded with Ya Gotta Have Soul stalking in third, while racing three wide for the first six furlongs. On the far turn, he began to move for the lead, engaging in a three-way battle down the stretch. He lived up to his name as the wire loomed, prevailing by a neck in a prolonged drive. Ya Gotta Have Soul earned an 83 Beyer Speed Figure in what was his fourth lifetime start.

Ya Gotta Have Soul is owned by Charles Fipke, who also campaigned the Darby Dan stallion Tale of Ekati. Ya Gotta Have Soul now has a record of 1-0-2 for his career and earned $30,000 for the victory.
