Wellabled Becomes First Stakes Winner for Shackleford

Wellabled's sparkling 7 3/4-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity (G3) marked the first stakes winner for first-crop sire Shackleford, whose eight winners to date ranks in the top five on the Freshman Sire list.

Wellabled is now just a neck away from being undefeated in three starts after dominating the competition in Saturday's seven-furlong Futurity, the colt's first start beyond 5 1/2-furlongs (VIDEO).

“The sky’s the limit for this horse,” trainer Larry Rivelli said. “I’m not so sure about other surfaces, I took him to Saratoga and worked him on the dirt a couple of times and he didn’t seem to like it, that’s why I chose to run him on the turf. His breeding suggests he’ll run long.”

Rivelli was referring to Wellabled's race over the grass in Saratoga's $100,000 Skidmore S., where he finished second by a head. Wellabled broke his maiden by 7 1/2-lengths at Arlington on July 9, a performance that earned the bay speedster a TDN Rising Star tag.

Wellabled's win upped his earnings to $96,200 for owner Carolyn Wilson, who bought the colt for $340,000 at this year's OBS Spring 2-year-old Sale in April.

Pedigree notes from TDN

Wellabled is the first stakes winner for first-crop sire Shackleford, who has a total of eight winners thus far. The juvenile is the first foal to race out of Expressive Diva, who did not produce a foal in 2015, but had a Tapizar colt Mar. 31 of this year. The half-sister to GISW Ringaskiddy (Slewsvescent) was bred back to Bodemeister.
