Verve's Tale first Breeders' Cup starter for Tale of Ekati

Tale of Ekati will have his first starter in the Breeders' Cup on Saturday when Verve's Tale breaks from the gate in the $3 million Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Barclay Tagg for owner/breeder Charles Fipke, Verve's Tale is a graded stakes winner who most recently finished third in the Beldame Inv. (G1) Oct. 6 at Belmont Park. The 5-year-old mare has competed at the highest level most of her career, finishing in the top three 17 of 22 times.

Saturday's ultra-tough field features the past two Kentucky Oaks (G1) winners as part of the 11-horse field. Brian Hernandez, Jr. will be aboard Verve's Tale for the first time, in post position six for the 1 1/8-mile affair.

The Distaff is race 9, with a scheduled post of 4:16 p.m. ET.
