Lalo's Baby Bear made an impressive late move to score a one-length victory in Hawthorne's March 21 feature, a second-level allowance race. The 5-year-old was the third winner in five days for 2003 Canadian turf champion Perfect Soul, who stands this year at Darby Dan for $15,000 live foal.

At Hawthorne, Lalo's Baby Bear bided his time along the inside in fourth for the first half-mile of the six furlongs. Eddie Perez switched his mount to the outside at the furlong marker, and the bay responded with enthusiasm to power to the lead inside the final sixteenth.

With the win, Lalo's Baby Bear is now 3-1-1 in 12 starts. He was bred in Illinois by his owner Fortino Inc. and trained by Chris Block. Fortino also bred Lalo's half-brother Holy Thursday, who was stakes placed at Hawthorne and earned nearly a quarter-million dollars.
