Beasley, a 2-year-old Shackleford colt, was tested sternly in his maiden special weight debut Thursday at Aqueduct, and after losing the lead in the stretch, battled back to claim victory by a nose in the six-furlong contest.

The bay colt is the 13th winner this year for his sire, ranking him in the top-10 on the Freshman Sire list. Shackleford, who bred 138 mares in 2016, will stand for $15,000 at Darby Dan next season.

Beasley, who had the lead through a half-mile in :46.77, was passed on the inside by Lunaire. The new leader was up by a length in mid-stretch, but Beasley battled back and got his nose on the wire first (VIDEO).

The winner was bred in Kentucky by Nancy Shulford and is owned by Lee Lewis and Mark Grier, who purchased Beasley for $340,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling sale in 2015.
