Darby Dan’s freshman sire Shackleford has caught fire with his first crop of 2-year-olds, as the Classic-winning, three-time Grade 1 winner picked up his third Maiden Special Weight winner in as many days when Oxblood captured his debut Sunday in a $59,000 race at Woodbine [VIDEO].

Trained by Nicholas Gonzalez, Oxblood was gamely in the stretch of the 4 ½-furlong race, posting a professional victory over his rivals in 53.96 seconds over the local Polytrack. He earned $25,749 for his owners Horse'n Around Racing Stable and Martha Gonzalez.

Bred in Kentucky by Mike Lauffer & Bill Cubbedge – both of whom campaigned Shackleford on the racetrack, Oxblood is out of the young stakes-placed Congrats mare Scarlet Starlet.

Sunday’s win comes on the heels of Shackleford’s first winner Friday – when his 2-year-old colt Little Nappy won a Maiden Special Weight at Gulfstream – and Shackleford’s second impressive winner Saturday in the form of TDN Rising Star Shackin Up, an 8 ¾-length debut winner at Arlington.

Shackleford’s first-crop of 2-year-olds have proved to be in high demand at the sales in 2016, with other 2-year-olds bringing $340,000, $310,000, $280,000, $250,000, etc. He currently stands at Darby Dan for a fee of $20,000 stands and nurses, and is again booked full for 2016.
