Salmanazar, a 3-year-old Shackleford colt, got his first stakes win in his 2018 debut Saturday at Gulfstream Park with a two-length score in the $75,000 Texas Glitter S.

Run at five furlongs on the turf, the Texas Glitter drew a field of eight. Salmanazar came out running to take command immediately. Shangroyal, who was second the entire way, could never get closer than a length at any point. The winner covered the distance in :55.84.

“He showed in his debut at Keeneland he’s a fast horse with a win going 4 ½,” trainer Todd Pletcher said of Salmanazar's victory last April. “The strategy was pretty straightforward. From the rail we wanted to make sure he broke sharply and he was able to do that. I thought he ran very well.

“He ran solid fractions and on this turf course, it seems like going five-eighths you want to be involved early because sometimes it can be hard to close a lot of ground,” he added. “We felt like speed’s his weapon and we’d tried to utilize it.”

Salmanazar is out of the Grand Slam mare Grandtessa and was bred by E. H. Beau Lane III. The bay colt was purchased by his owner Starlight Racing for $160,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling sale.

Shackleford was a top-three Second-Crop sire of 2017 by progeny earnings and first by winners and is a top-10 Third-Crop sire this year.
