Salmanazar, a 2-year-old Shackleford colt making his first start, came home a 1 3/4-length winner in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight Thursday at Keeneland.

After breaking very sharply from the outside post in the field of 10 juveniles, Salmanazar took the lead and never looked back, stopping the timer in :51.33 seconds on a fast track, the quickest time of the meet thus far.

The winner is the first starter out of his dam Grandtessa, who has a yearling full-brother to Salmanazar. Owner Starlight Stable secured the bay colt bred by E. H. Beau Lane III for $180,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Currently the top-ranked Second-Crop Sire in North America, Shackleford's stellar crop of runners this year include five stakes horses topped by Rebel S. (G2) winner Malagacy, a strong candidate for the May 6 Kentucky Derby (G1).
