Promises Fulfilled secured himself a spot in next month's Breeders' Cup with an extremely gritty performance in Friday's $250,000 Phoenix S. (G2) at Keeneland, defeating top-class older horses in a three-way photo.

The 3-year-old son of Shackleford, already a three-time graded stakes winner this year, upped his earnings to $920,280 for owner Robert Baron and trainer Dale Romans.

Now, it's just a matter of which race best suits the versatile colt.

“I'm sure we'll go, we'll have to decide where the best place to put him, the (Dirt) Mile or the Sprint,” said Romans. “But this is a good enough win in it's own right.”

The Phoenix shaped up as a showdown between Promises Fulfilled, along with Whitmore and Limousine Liberal, and that was the trio that determined the outcome. Promises Fulfilled was pursued through a half-mile in :45.09 by Heartwood, who faded at the top of the stretch. In mid-stretch, it looked as though Whitmore had the momentum, but Promises Fulfilled dug in to claim the win by a head, with Limousine Liberal a half-length back in third.

The final time of 1:09.05 was about a half-second off the track record.

Promises Fulfilled won the Allen Jerkens S. (G1) and Amsterdam S. (G3) in his prior two starts, and is now 6-0-2 in 10 starts. He is the leading earner this year for Shackleford, who is in the top 10 on the Third-Crop Sire list by earnings, black type wins and black type winners.
