Shackleford's top-class 3-year-old colt Promises Fulfilled scored his first stakes win since taking the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) in Saturday's $200,000 Amsterdam S. (G3) at Saratoga, much to the delight of his trainer Dale Romans.

"The horse has done so well since Belmont Day (June 9, when he ran third in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens S.) that I just didn't see him losing it, and I'm usually a pessimist, but he's just changed,” said Romans, who trained Promises Fulfilled’s sire Shackleford to victories in the 2011 Grade 1 Preakness and 2012 Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. “He turned a corner. It's like he's a man now. I think we're going to see bigger and better things out of him.”

Promises Fulfilled got an excellent ride from Luis Saez in the 6 1/2-furlong Amsterdam. Strike Power broke on top and flew through the opening quarter-mile in :21.28 seconds, with Promises Fulfilled just a length back in second.

Around the turn, Promises Fulfilled came alongside the pacesetter, and the two were right together after a half-mile in :43.92. Strike Power began to fade soonafter, but Promises Fulfilled was strong all the way to the wire, beating Engage by 3 1/4-lengths in 1:15.18 on a “good” main track.

“We talked in the paddock, I told Luis to go,” said Romans. “I told him to give him a chance, he looked at me a little funny, and I said, 'OK, give him a chance and then race right from there.' He rode a beautiful race, but it was good, it was really good.”

With the win, Promises Fulfilled upped his record to 4-0-2 in eight starts and has earned $495,280 for owner Robert Baron.

Promises Fulfilled is one of Shackleford's seven stakes horses this year. The Darby Dan stallion ranks in the top 10 on the 2018 Third-Crop Sire list by winners, stakes winners, stakes horses and progeny earnings.
