Billy’s Star closed late to win Sunday’s $140,250 Victoria Park S. at Woodbine to secure the first stakes win for the 3-year-old Perfect Soul colt.

Billy’s Star is Perfect Soul’s 20th lifetime black type horse and pushed his sire past the $13.4 million mark in lifetime progeny earnings.

Sitting last of six for the first three-quarters of a mile in the nine furlong affair, Billy’s Star commenced a four-wide rally on the turn. With all the momentum in the final two furlongs, Billy’s Star rolled by heavy favorite Conquest Pacemaker and kept Firespike at bay late to win by 1 ¼-lengths in 1:51.42 on the Polytrack.

“He’s got a good turn of foot,” said trainer Roger Attfield. “I said to (jockey) Alan (Garcia) that he’ll sit off the pace, no problem, and he’s got a decent quarter-of-a-mile kick. It all worked out well.”

Billy’s Star was bred in Ontario by part owner Charles Fipke, who also campaigned Perfect Soul to champion turf horse honors in Canada. Billy’s Star is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Tapatina. He banked $90,000 in victory, bringing his lifetime earnings to over $197,000.
