Darby Dan Sales graduate Lord Shanakill showed his grit and determination today, battling to victory in the Betfair Cup (Lennox S.)-G2 at Glorious Goodwood.
Carrying 128 lbs., the Group 1 winner pushed his career earnings past $880,000, with a stellar display of racing class in the historic 7-furlong event. Lord Shanakill settled in fifth behind the pace-setters, before commencing his run early in the stretch. He grabbed the lead with 100 yards to go, then warded off a strong challenge from Storm Cat’s son Cat Junior to earn the victory by a neck.
This was the second straight stakes victory and fourth career stakes win for Lord Shanakill, who had the 2009 Prix Jean Prat (G1) and 2008 Mill Reef S. (G2) already on his resume. The son of Speightstown has also placed in six other Group races, including the Dewhurst S. (G1), Prix Morny (G1), St. James Palace S. (G1) and Lockinge S. (G1).
Bred in Kentucky by Vimal Khosla, Gillian Khosla and Templeton Stud, Lord Shanakill was sold by Darby Dan for $110,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale to BBA Ireland. Out of the Theatrical (Ire) mare Green Room, Lord Shanakill races for Mogeely Stud and Mark Gittins, and is now trained by the veteran Henry Cecil.
Lord Shanakill is the fifth Group or Graded stakes winner of 2010 from Darby Dan Sales consignments.
