Perfect Soul's 3-year-old colt Golden Soul earned his way into the top 20 on the Kentucky Derby (G1) points list with a second-place finish in the $200,000 Lecomte S. (G3) Saturday at Fair Grounds (VIDEO). The Charles Fipke homebred earned four points, putting him in 12th place on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby”, the rankings list maintained by Churchill Downs. The top 20 point earners over this spring's prep races are guaranteed a spot in the Derby starting gate.

Golden Soul came into the Lecomte after a sparkling 7 1/4-length maiden win on Dec. 30, also at Fair Grounds. After getting squeezed back shortly after the start of the 1 mile and 70 yard Lecomte, Golden Soul found himself in the back of the nine-horse after a quarter mile. Between horses down the backstretch, Golden Soul was some eight lengths off a very moderate pace set by Oxbow. Around the final turn, Golden Soul began to make up ground, passing horses while fanning wide into the stretch. Oxbow was able to retain the lead in the lane after the slow pace, but Golden Soul proved best of the rest with his second-place finish.

“We were between horses the whole way, although he’s one of the rare few that’s able to handle being between horses the whole time,” said Golden Soul's rider Brian Hernandez. “When I squeezed on him he picked it up nicely; the winner was just a little more seasoned and a little bit better horse today. We ran a nice second. He finished good and I think the distance will help him. The further they go the better he’ll get. And it’s only his third start so to step up like he did in the Lecomte, there’s no denying he’s a good horse.”

The next race at Fair Grounds on the Kentucky Derby trail is the $400,000 Risen Star S. (G2) on Feb. 23, a race trainer Dallas Stewart says is the next logical spot for his stable star.

“I hope so. As long as he comes out of this in good shape that’s the way we’re headed,” said Stewart.

Golden Soul is out of the unraced mare Hollywood Gold. She has produced six winners to date, including Quintons Gold Rush, winner of the Grade 2 Coolmore Lexington S. at Keeneland.

Golden Soul is now 1-2-0 in three starts, with earnings of $73,400.
